Germany faces economic pressure from trade deficits and retail decline
Germany's economic landscape faces multiple pressures across trade, retail, and labor sectors. In August, German exports fell by 0.8 percent to 137.6 billion euros, while imports rose by 0.9 percent, causing the trade surplus to shrink to 19.5 billion euros. Notably, the trade deficit with China has climbed to 76 billion euros.
In the retail sector, the German retail industry is struggling with the rise of e-commerce. Projections from the German Retail Association (HDE) suggest that 4,900 stores in Germany may close in 2026, following the loss of 4,500 stores in 2025. Market researchers note a growing trend in Asia where physical retail is evolving into experiential spaces to counter the convenience of digital shopping.
Simultaneously, labor tensions are rising in Bavaria's metal and electrical industries. IG Metall has initiated negotiations for a new collective agreement affecting 800,000 employees, requesting a 5 percent wage increase and higher apprentice compensation. However, employers have yet to present a formal counter-offer, citing the current economic crisis.
