Germany faces increased traffic congestion and infrastructure debates

Germany is experiencing significant transportation challenges due to increased traffic congestion and ongoing infrastructure projects. According to the ADAC, the 2026 summer holiday period saw an 8% increase in the number of traffic jams compared to 2025, totaling over 128,000 incidents. While the average duration of these jams decreased slightly, the total length of congestion rose by approximately 4%. A primary driver for these delays is the high number of active highway construction sites, which averaged around 1,000 across the country.

Specific regional updates include major roadworks on the A7 and A8, as well as bridge renovations in Herne and Lenggries. In the rail sector, a long-standing debate continues regarding the Hamburg-Hannover route. A draft proposal from coalition politicians in the Bundestag suggests constructing a new high-speed line rather than expanding existing tracks, citing benefits in travel time, environmental impact, and noise reduction. This move faces opposition from the Lower Saxony state government, which favors an expansion alternative.

Despite the end of the summer holidays, traffic remains heavy due to seasonal travel to coastal and mountain regions, combined with increasing commuter volume and ongoing maintenance work.
