Germany traffic warnings issued for autumn holiday travel
The start of autumn school holidays in several German states, including Hessen, Saarland, and Rheinland-Pfalz, is expected to increase traffic volume and cause congestion on major motorways. The ADAC has warned of potential delays, particularly on the A 3, A 5, and A 7 autobahns, as well as near major metropolitan areas like Frankfurt.
Traffic is expected to be heaviest starting Friday afternoon and through Saturday morning. Ongoing construction projects on various routes, such as the Frankfurter Kreuz on the A 3 and the Kirchheimer Dreieck on the A 4, are expected to further slow movement. There are currently over 1,000 construction sites active on German autobahns.
Travelers are advised to plan trips anti-cyclically to avoid peak times. The weekend of October 16 to 18 is also identified as a critical period due to return traffic from other federal states. Additionally, holiday travel to Switzerland may increase as school holidays begin in several Swiss cantons.
