Germany unemployment dips modestly while Austria's Melk district sees a sharp rise

In Germany, the Federal Employment Agency reported that the number of unemployed fell by 15,000 in June 2026, bringing the total to 2.936 million and lowering the unemployment rate to 6.2 %. About 1.052 million people received unemployment benefits, 90,000 more than a year earlier, while 3.804 million were on the citizen’s income scheme. Job vacancies rose to 648,000, 16,000 more than the previous year.

In the Austrian district of Melk, unemployment rose 16.4 % year‑on‑year to 1,425 people in June. The local employment service has issued 7,207 job‑matching proposals since the start of the year, including 1,074 concrete offers last month. From January to June, 2,622 job seekers secured employment, but 148 remain long‑term unemployed.
