Germany unveils ‘d-you’ digital identity wallet
Germany has unveiled ‘d-you’, its official European Digital Identity (EUDI) wallet, which is scheduled to launch on January 2, 2027. The application is designed to allow citizens to store and use digital versions of identification documents, driver’s licenses, and other credentials on their smartphones.
Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger stated that the wallet emphasizes user control, transparency, and security, noting that data will be stored encrypted on the user’s device rather than in the cloud. The service will be voluntary and free of charge, and physical ID cards will remain valid.
At launch, approximately 40 partners from the business, science, and public administration sectors will provide services through the wallet. These include age verification, the ability to sign legally binding contracts, and opening online bank accounts. Participating partners include EON, Vodafone, Deutsche Post, and various state governments.
The project is part of the EU-wide EUDI Wallet framework, which requires member states to provide interoperable digital identity solutions. The development involves international cooperation, including participation from Ukraine, which is contributing expertise from its Diia.Engine platform.
