Germany unveils ‘d-you’ digital identity wallet for 2027 launch

The German government has officially introduced ‘d-you’, a digital wallet application designed to store essential identification documents on smartphones. Scheduled for launch on January 2, 2027, the app is the German implementation of the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet.

At launch, the service will primarily feature the digital national identity card. Future updates are expected to include driver's licenses, birth certificates, academic certificates, tickets, and health insurance cards. Approximately 40 providers, including banks, postal services, energy suppliers, universities, and municipalities, intend to participate from the start.

The wallet aims to streamline digital transactions and administrative processes, such as opening bank accounts or verifying age. A key feature is enhanced data privacy: users can verify specific attributes, such as being of legal age, without disclosing their full name, address, or date of birth. Data will be stored encrypted on the device and accessed via PIN or biometric authentication, with no central database of complete citizen profiles planned.
