Germany updates healthcare co-payment and medical aid rules

New regulations in Germany are set to impact healthcare costs and the procurement of medical aids for people with disabilities and those requiring care.

Starting in 2026, a recalculation of the hardship limit for co-payments will take effect. For individuals with recognized severe disabilities, the personal burden limit is generally set at 2 percent of annual gross household income, though it can be as low as 1 percent in certain cases. This measure aims to provide relief for those facing rising costs for medications, therapies, and medical travel.

Additionally, as of September 1, 2026, new guidelines from the GKV-Spitzenverband allow nursing professionals to recommend certain medical aids and care supplies directly. Under these rules, a recommendation from a qualified nursing professional can replace the need for a formal doctor's prescription for items such as walkers, hospital beds, or toileting aids, provided the professional is providing specific care or advisory services. This change is intended to reduce bureaucracy and ease the burden on individuals with limited mobility.
