Germany updates healthcare reimbursement regulations
Germany is implementing significant changes to healthcare reimbursements. As of September 1, 2026, the Federal Administration Office has announced increased assistance for certain therapies under federal law. This adjustment applies to specific healing methods, such as occupational therapy and expanded outpatient physiotherapy, benefiting federal civil servants and eligible dependents.
Separately, a major shift in the statutory health insurance system will occur in January 2027. At that time, statutory health insurance providers will be prohibited from covering the costs of homeopathic and anthroposophic preparations through voluntary benefits. While proponents cite the principle of evidence-based medicine, critics, including the Homeopathic Association Pfullingen, have expressed concern regarding the financial burden this will place on users of alternative therapies.
