Germany weather alert: Severe storms and heatwave transition
Germany is facing a significant weather shift as a warm spell is followed by a dangerous storm front. On Thursday, temperatures are expected to rise between 22 and 34 degrees Celsius across much of the country, providing a final summer-like peak.
However, the German Weather Service (DWD) warns of a severe weather transition starting Thursday evening and continuing through Friday. A cold front moving from the west will collide with hot, humid air, triggering intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and the potential for flash floods.
Specific regions are at high risk. Southern Germany, including Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, may experience severe thunderstorms, large hail, and wind gusts reaching up to 120 km/h. In parts of the southeast, there is a risk of hurricane-force gusts. Other areas, such as North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony, are also under alert for heavy rain and storm activity. Meteorologists have identified the period from Thursday evening to Friday as the most critical window for severe weather impacts.
