German women's hockey team eliminated from World Cup semi-finals
The German women's national field hockey team has been eliminated from the 2026 World Cup semi-finals following a 1-3 defeat against co-host Belgium in Wavre. Despite a goal from Lisa Nolte via a penalty corner to equalize in the third quarter, Belgium responded quickly with a goal from Stephanie Vanden Borre and later a strike from Charlotte Englebert to secure the win.
As a result of the loss and a previous point deficit, Germany can no longer reach the top two positions in Group F required for the semi-finals. The team will now compete for fifth place in their final intermediate round match against Spain.
While the women's team faces this setback, the German men's team, the defending world and European champions, remain in contention for the title. The men must defeat Australia to advance to the semi-finals. The tournament is being co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands.
