ZEW economic sentiment rises in Germany and Eurozone

Investor sentiment in the Eurozone and Germany showed significant improvement in August 2026. The ZEW Economic Sentiment index for the Eurozone rose to 31.4 points, exceeding market expectations and marking a three-month upward trend. This was accompanied by a rise in the Eurozone Current Situation Index to -21.5 points.

In Germany, the ZEW expectations index climbed to 34.2 points, driven by resilient exports, strong corporate earnings, and federal infrastructure spending. The German Current Situation Index also saw a sharp improvement, rising to -61.1 points. The recovery was broad-based, with notable gains in the vehicle industry, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, mechanical engineering, and metal production. Private consumption expectations also trended upward.

Despite the rising optimism, economic risks persist. Key concerns include elevated energy costs, geopolitical tensions, and record-low water levels on the Rhine, which pose an acute short-term risk to German industrial activity and logistics.
