German-Hungarian economic outlook 2026
Overview
In August 2026, investor sentiment in Germany and the Eurozone strengthened significantly. The German ZEW expectations index rose to 34.2 points, up from 26.3 in the previous month, while the Eurozone-wide sentiment index climbed to 31.4 points. This recovery was supported by strong corporate results and robust exports in sectors such as vehicles, chemicals, and mechanical engineering. However, acute short-term risks to German industrial activity and logistics have emerged due to record-low water levels on the Rhine.
In Hungary, the economy shows sustained expansion. The Central Statistical Office revised second-quarter GDP growth upward to 1.7 percent year-on-year, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of growth. This expansion was driven by a 3.7 percent increase in industrial output, particularly in the manufacturing of computer, electronic, and optical products.
Monetary policy in Hungary remains in a transition phase. Following a drop in inflation to 1.2% in July, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) completed a summer easing cycle under Governor Mihály Varga, implementing three consecutive 25 basis point cuts to bring the base interest rate to 5.5%—its lowest level since May 2022. Despite these central bank cuts, commercial banks like Trive Bank and Gránit Bank continue to offer deposit rates between 7% and 8%, providing real returns that exceed inflation. Investors are now awaiting the MNB’s September quarterly inflation report to determine if the central bank will continue its dovish path or pause to assess the impact on the forint.
