Germany's Bundeswehr Day draws over 100,000 visitors and anti‑militarist protests

On 6 June 2026 the German armed forces staged their annual "Tag der Bundeswehr" at numerous sites nationwide. More than 100,000 citizens visited the exhibitions, which showcased military equipment and offered recruitment information. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said the event strengthens the link between the armed forces and society, quoting that “our democracy needs protection” and outlining plans to expand the active personnel to 260,000.

At the same time, peace groups and anti‑militarist activists organised protests under the campaign “Kein Tag der Bundeswehr”. Demonstrators criticised the militarisation of public space, the high cost of arms programmes and urged disarmament and civilian conflict‑resolution policies. The protests featured rallies, information stands and creative actions aimed at highlighting the human costs of war.

Both the recruitment drive and the opposition demonstrations reflect a broader public debate in Germany over defence spending, conscription policy and the role of the military in society.
