Germany's Elbe Bridge between Saxony‑Anhalt and Brandenburg Begins Construction
Two federal ministers and a state minister held a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for a new Elbe bridge in Wittenberge. The bridge will carry the B 189 between Geestgottberg (Saxony‑Anhalt) and Wittenberge (Brandenburg) and include a three‑metre wide pedestrian and cycle lane. The federal government is providing about €120 million for the three‑year project, which will span 1,109 metres and feature a deck width of 13.8 metres. Transport ministers described the structure as a central traffic artery for commuters, regional economic growth and tourism, and as an improvement for cycle traffic.
Construction is set to start on the Brandenburg side, with the bridge intended to integrate with the nearby A 14 motorway bridge and to be opened to traffic in roughly three years, enhancing regional mobility and development prospects.
