Germany's Eudi‑Wallet launch delayed amid management and security concerns

The German government’s planned digital identity wallet, the Eudi‑Wallet, is unlikely to meet its target launch date of 2 January 2027. Internal reports cite chaotic project management, repeatedly shifted deadlines and a conflict of interest involving the project leader, who also works for the Open Wallet Foundation, a lobby group for the digital‑identity sector.

The Federal Agency for “Sprung Innovation” (Sprind), which took over the programme in 2024, is not structured for large‑scale operational delivery. Security doubts raised by insiders have reportedly been ignored by both Sprind and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), which says a final security assessment can only be made once development is complete. Consumer groups warn that, at launch, the wallet will only store basic data such as name, birthdate and address, lacking advanced features like qualified electronic signatures, pseudonyms, payment authorisation and zero‑knowledge proof verification.
