Germany's Federal Network Agency Builds Emergency Power Platform

The Bundesnetzagentur is developing a new "Sicherheitsplattform Strom" to coordinate electricity consumption in the event of a severe power shortage. The platform will register large industrial users—such as BASF, Aurubis, ArcelorMittal, and Salzgitter—and, if a crisis is declared under the Energy Security Act, instruct them to reduce their load with a 24‑to‑72‑hour notice. The system mirrors the existing gas emergency platform and is being built together with the four German transmission system operators, with Amprion tasked with its operation.

The agency says the measure is a precaution for highly unlikely but possible multi‑day or week‑long blackouts, amid rising electricity demand from wind and solar expansion, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and data centres, and slower grid reinforcement in eastern Germany. Officials stress that the German power grid remains among the most stable worldwide, but the platform adds an extra layer of crisis preparedness.
