Germany electricity emergency platform

In late July 2026 Germany’s Federal Network Agency announced the creation of a "Security Platform Electricity" to coordinate load‑shedding among large industrial consumers if a prolonged power shortage occurs. The scheme would require firms using at least eight GWh per year – covering sectors such as chemicals, metal, paper and food – to register in a nationwide database managed by transmission system operator Amprion. In a crisis the agency could order reductions or disconnect non‑compliant users, mirroring the earlier gas‑emergency platform introduced after the 2022‑23 energy crisis.

Two days later the agency provided further details: the platform, dubbed "Sicherheitsplattform Strom," will list specific companies including BASF, Aurubis, ArcelorMittal and Salzgitter. If a shortage is declared under the Energy Security Act, participants could be instructed to cut load with 24‑ to 72‑hour notice. The measure is presented as a precaution against unlikely multi‑day blackouts driven by rising electricity demand from wind and solar expansion, electric vehicles, heat pumps, data centres, and slower grid reinforcement in eastern Germany. Officials stressed that Germany’s grid remains highly stable, and the platform is an additional preparedness tool rather than a secret plan to cause blackouts.
