Germany's Federal Office for Radiation Protection advises radon testing

The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) recommends that residents use the start of the heating season to conduct radon measurements in their homes. Radon is a radioactive gas present in the soil throughout Germany that can penetrate buildings.

Long-term exposure to high levels of radon increases the risk of lung cancer. Because the gas is odorless, tasteless, and invisible, the risk often goes unnoticed. The BfS notes that elevated radon levels in indoor air are typically most apparent during the winter months, making the heating period an ideal time for multi-month testing.

For accurate annual results, the office suggests measuring for a full year using passive measuring devices, which are evaluated in a laboratory. Electronic devices are also available for short-term snapshots. The BfS provides an online list of providers whose devices have been tested for suitability.
