Germany's Federal Voluntary Service expands with new school placements and stipend details

The Gymnasium Winsen in Lower Saxony is recruiting a Bundesfreiwilligendienst (BFD) volunteer for the 2026‑27 school year. The role includes supporting sports and swimming lessons, homework tutoring, organizing projects such as "Youth Trains for the Olympics" and the school’s football AG, and accompanying excursions. The Landkreis Wittenberg agency has published a list of open BFD positions across the district, chiefly in secondary schools, special schools and day‑care facilities. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, commit to a 12‑month service of 21‑39 hours per week, and receive a monthly allowance of €208‑€250 plus a minimum of 12 seminar days. A police clearance is required at no cost to the volunteer. Applications are submitted in writing to the district’s educational office.

BFD participants receive an allowance rather than a salary; the federal upper limit for 2026 is €676 per month, with typical payments ranging from €450 to €644 depending on placement, age and working hours. The allowance includes coverage of social‑security contributions, and many hosts add benefits such as accommodation, meals, transport or work clothing. Youth under 25 are eligible for up to €300 per month in additional federal support, while those 25 and older may receive up to €400. Existing child and orphan benefits continue unchanged for volunteers.
