Germany expands battery storage capacity with multiple new projects
German energy firms are scaling up large‑scale battery storage to support the renewable transition. Sungrow and MaxSolar completed a 25 MWh PowerTitan 2.0 unit at Wutzldorf in Bavaria in June 2026 and plan to add a 100 MWh facility at Winterschneidbach by November 2026, bringing the combined Bavarian pilot capacity to 125 MWh. In Koblenz, the Moselbad public swimming pool installed two TESVOLT FORTON batteries with a combined 184 kWh capacity and a 1 790 m² solar canopy, funded with roughly €1 million and expected to cut CO₂ emissions by about 173 tonnes per year. RWE is constructing a 236 MW, 470 MWh lithium‑ion battery plant at the Hambach open‑pit mine, slated for operation in 2027. The Förderstedt project in Saxony‑Anhalt will reach 300 MW and over 700 MWh when fully completed in 2027, enough to supply roughly 500 000 households for two hours; the first 100 MW block should start this year. Uniper plans a data‑center campus on the former Staudinger coal‑plant site in Großkrotzenburg, incorporating battery storage and a 900 MW hydrogen‑ready gas‑steam turbine to provide flexible power for digital infrastructure.
