Germany's gas storage falls to 48.5% as reserve plan delayed to 2027

As of 4 August 2026, German gas storage was at 48.5 % of capacity, the lowest level for this time of year since records began and well below the EU average of 57.1 %.

The federal government plans a national gas reserve of 24 TWh, far smaller than the 78 TWh recommended by the Initiative Energien Speichern (INES). Construction is scheduled to start in 2027, meaning the reserve will not be available for the winter 2026/27 season.

Because the reserve will not be operational, winter supply depends on existing storage. Projections indicate storage could reach about 60 % by 1 November 2026, short of the 70 % target. The Federal Network Agency still classifies the situation as stable, but the low fill level triggers the lowest crisis alert level.
