Germany's gas storage falls to historic low as winter approaches

On July 26 2026, Germany's underground gas storage held 101 billion cubic metres of natural gas, a fill rate of 46.19 % – the lowest level recorded since the European Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) began tracking in 2011. The Bundesnetzagentur noted that while the storage level is low, the overall gas supply remains stable.

Neighbouring Netherlands and Belgium also reported record‑low storage: the Netherlands at 35.34 % (45 bcm) and Belgium at 32.14 % (2.2 bcm), the lowest since 2015. The EU average stood at 55.66 %. Gazprom warned that, if the current injection rate continues, the combined European storage could fall below 75 % by 1 October, heightening risk of insufficient gas for the upcoming heating season.
