Germany's governing coalition faces fiscal and energy policy tensions

The German governing coalition is facing significant internal tension regarding economic policy and fiscal responsibility. Wolfgang Steiger, Secretary General of the Wirtschaftsrat, has characterized the relationship between the CDU/CSU and SPD as a project of opposites, noting fundamental conflicts over debt, reforms, and redistribution.

Amidst rising fuel prices, which recently reached yearly highs, the government has agreed to a new version of a fuel discount. This measure, involving a temporary reduction in energy tax, is set to take effect on October 1 and aims to lower prices by up to 17 cents per liter. Additionally, discussions regarding a dynamic price cap are underway.

While the coalition seeks to address consumer burdens, disagreements persist regarding windfall taxes. Although there are calls to pursue an EU-wide windfall tax on energy profits, the European Commission has indicated that no such proposal will be presented at this time.
