Germany gas reserves hit historic lows, threatening EU winter supply
European gas reserves have reached critically low levels heading into the winter season, with Germany identified as a primary vulnerability for the entire European Union. Reports indicate that European storage is currently at approximately 58% capacity, which is 16 percentage points below the five-year average and at its lowest level since data collection began in 2011.
In Germany, gas storage is reported at only 47%—the lowest level recorded for August. Because Germany represents over 20% of the EU's total storage capacity, any local shortages could trigger price spikes and supply issues for neighboring countries. The German government has maintained a market-oriented approach, refusing to intervene directly in the market to mandate gas purchases, despite warnings that economic incentives for companies to store gas are diminishing due to high summer prices.
