Germany's Merz Urges Stronger EU Support for Ukraine Ahead of NATO Summit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told reporters in Berlin that European backing for Ukraine remains unwavering and called for robust financial aid to Kyiv. He warned Russia that Ukraine stays strong and urged the start of peace negotiations. Merz made the remarks at a gathering that also featured French President Emmanuel Macron and representatives from Poland, Italy and the United Kingdom as preparations continue for the NATO summit in Ankara in early July.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Serbia Oleksandar Litvinenko said relations between Serbia and Ukraine have significant room for improvement. He highlighted the launch of the first EU‑accession negotiation cluster for Ukraine and expressed Ukraine’s aim to become a full EU member. Litvinenko also noted Ukraine’s role as a European security shield, discussed ongoing corruption challenges, and mentioned Serbia’s desire for a trade agreement comparable to its deal with Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov condemned the accession talks, warning they could destabilise the EU.
