Germany's Ministry of Defense issues fines for military registration failures

The German Federal Ministry of Defense, led by Boris Pistorius, has initiated administrative proceedings against young men who failed to complete and submit mandatory military registration questionnaires. Those who do not comply with the legal obligation after receiving reminders face fines of up to 250 euros.

The ministry reports that approximately 10,000 men, or about 4 percent of those contacted, have failed to respond within the required timeframe. The ministry clarified that paying or receiving a fine does not exempt individuals from their legal obligation to complete the registration process.

In a broader context regarding military readiness, the Bundeswehr has reached a personnel level of approximately 192,000 soldiers, meeting its 2026 target ahead of schedule. While the military aims to grow to 460,000 personnel by 2035, Defense Minister Pistorius stated that the reactivation of compulsory military service is not currently under debate.
