Germany's Mittelstand faces critical business succession shortage

Germany's small and medium-sized enterprises (Mittelstand) are facing a critical shortage of successors as a generational shift approaches. According to the Nachfolgemonitor 2026, business transfers reached a historical low in 2024, with the average age of outgoing owners rising to 64 years.

In the Bavarian region of Schwaben, the challenge is particularly acute. A study by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs indicates that nearly 25,000 companies in the region are due for handover by 2031, affecting more than 100,000 employees. Currently, 29 percent of business owners in the area are aged 60 or older.

The demographic imbalance is compounded by a declining number of female successors; the proportion of women taking over businesses fell to 18.9 percent in 2025, the first time it has dropped below the 20 percent threshold. Experts note that potential successors are primarily concentrated in the 30 to 39 age bracket, creating a significant gap in leadership continuity.
