German Defense Minister Pistorius Mulls Pulling Ships from Hormuz

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said Germany will not keep its navy vessels in Djibouti indefinitely and is weighing a decision in the summer to bring the mine‑hunter Fulda and the supply ship Mosel back to Germany. The ships have been stationed in Djibouti for a potential minesweeping mission in the Strait of Hormuz, but the required conditions – a cease‑fire, an international legal framework, and approval from the German parliament – are not yet met. Iran has rejected the mission, and the German side stressed that any deployment depends on further talks, particularly involving the United States.

Around 140 German sailors are currently awaiting orders. Despite the uncertainty, the German navy remains ready, and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reiterated Germany’s continued willingness to support a Hormuz minesweeping operation if the pre‑conditions are fulfilled.
