Germany's subterranean landscapes offer diverse experiences ranging from adventurous cave climbing to historical exploration. In the Elbsandsteingebirge region near Königstein, beginners can participate in guided tours through caves such as the Diebshöhle and Baumannhöhle. These activities require specialized equipment, including helmets, headlamps, and specific footwear, to navigate narrow rock crevices and dark passages.

In the Harz region, the underground world features over 170 known caves and grottos, including ancient systems like the Baumannshöhle and Hermannshöhle, which have yielded significant scientific findings such as cave bear bone fragments. The region also contains unique geological formations, such as the Barbarossahöhle, one of only two publicly accessible anhydrite caves in the world. Additionally, the Harz landscape includes historical industrial sites, such as the Knesebeck shaft mine in Bad Grund, which was the last active ore mine in the Upper Harz before its closure in 1992.
