Germany's Veteran Day marked by protests and official ceremonies

On 21 June 2026 Germany held the second National Veteran Day. In Berlin, activists interrupted Defence Minister Boris Pistorius’s appearance at the Reichstag, chanting against conscription and holding a banner reading “Future without war”. Pistorius responded, saying “Ein Motto der Bundeswehr ist: Wir kämpfen auch dafür, dass du gegen uns sein kannst,” and received applause before police removed the demonstrators and filed house‑breaking charges.

Later that day in Wuppertal, Mayor Heiner Fragemann welcomed veterans and their families at the town hall, stressing the importance of the new holiday. He said, “Es ist gut und richtig, dass der Veteranentag einen festen Platz in unserem gesellschaftlichen Kalender erhält.” Veterans shared personal reflections on service and reintegration, highlighting both the honor and lasting challenges of military life.
