Ghana 24-hour economy policy faces calls for budgetary support
Ghana's flagship 24-hour economy policy, launched in July 2025, is facing scrutiny regarding its implementation and funding. Economist Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin of the University of Ghana Business School has stated that the initiative lacks a dedicated financial framework and should be implemented in phases tied directly to the national budget with specific ministerial responsibilities.
While the policy aims to drive industrialization, reduce import reliance, and boost exports, critics note the absence of a substantial document tracking performance against the promised three-shift model. Government data suggests early progress, reporting that 268 filling stations and 33 manufacturers have adopted three-shift systems, contributing to a reported 160,000 direct jobs and a US$11.5 billion project pipeline.
George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, Member of Parliament for Cape-Coast South, noted that the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat has established the necessary foundations. He emphasized that the next priority must be translating this groundwork into sustainable employment, particularly for the youth, through effective economic stimulation and reliable infrastructure.
