Ghana aims to direct $8 bn diaspora remittances into capital‑market and infrastructure projects

The Ghana Securities and Exchange Commission announced a plan to attract billions of dollars of diaspora capital for the country’s capital market, business expansion and infrastructure development. Deputy Director‑General Mensah Thompson said discussions with Ghanaian communities in the United Kingdom and United States revealed a strong appetite to invest in viable, revenue‑generating projects if proper regulatory frameworks are established. The SEC is working with broker‑dealers to create investment products that can channel a portion of the roughly US$8 billion in annual remittance inflows into long‑term, regulated investments.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa highlighted that remittances reached a record US$7.8 billion in 2025, about 6 % of Ghana’s GDP, outpacing foreign direct investment and ranking second only to gold among foreign‑exchange earners. He linked this financial contribution to the government’s decision to evacuate Ghanaians affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa, underscoring the diaspora’s importance to national development. The minister urged returning citizens to consider investing their skills and capital in Ghana’s growing economy.
