Ghana economic development and investment push
Overview
Since mid‑May 2026, Ghana has pursued a 24‑Hour Economy agenda, rolling out District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) markets in the Upper East, Accra, Volta, and Central regions. The government has leveraged the DACF to fund various education, health, and water projects, with a new disbursement model sending 80% of funds directly to municipal assemblies.
Economic strategies include a £215 million Ghana‑UK Growth Partnership, a €100 million EU security contribution, and efforts to channel US$7.8 billion in annual diaspora remittances into capital markets and infrastructure. To fuel the 24-hour economy, officials are pushing for commodity-backed financing and targeting non-traditional export growth, which recently surpassed US$5 billion.
In the energy sector, Ghana is positioning itself as a regional hub through a US$20 billion petroleum hub plan, a US$200 million seismic survey, and plans for a major palm oil processing plant in Akyem Abuakwa. The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) is seeking US$3.5 billion for upstream investment to meet rising gas demand.
Social reforms under President John Dramani Mahama include the Free Primary Healthcare Programme, a recruitment drive for 16,000 nurses, and a plan to phase out the Senior High School double-track system by 2027. The administration also aims to revive the Komenda Sugar Factory and Volta Star Textiles. Fiscal stability was bolstered by an early $700 million Eurobond settlement in July 2026.
