Ghana and China seek AI healthcare partnerships

Ghana's Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has called for enhanced partnerships between Ghana, China, and the broader West African region to advance artificial intelligence and medical technology. Speaking at the 3rd China-West Africa Medical & Health Industry & AI Diagnosis Project Cooperation Summit and Expo in Accra, she emphasized that AI is already an active force reshaping healthcare delivery.

Dr. Ayensu-Danquah highlighted that AI-assisted diagnostics, medical imaging, and predictive analysis could extend specialist expertise to underserved areas. She noted that while technology offers opportunities for disease prevention and health system management, it must be clinically validated, secure, affordable, and designed to support rather than replace the judgment of healthcare professionals.

To build a resilient healthcare system, the Deputy Minister advocated for cooperation that moves beyond importing finished products. She proposed focusing on local manufacturing, technology transfer, research collaboration, and professional training. Such efforts aim to transition West Africa from a consumer of health technologies to a more self-sufficient producer, thereby strengthening regional health security and creating jobs.
