Ghana and Ivory Coast Expand Climate Action Initiatives

Ghana announced a broadened climate agenda that moves beyond tree‑planting to include marine protected areas, a ban on polystyrene foam, renewable‑energy investment, sustainable agriculture, clean‑cooking solutions and improved waste management. The measures were outlined by Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah at the 2026 World Environment Day ceremony and aim to strengthen resilience to floods, droughts and coastal erosion.

Ivory Coast’s Environment and Ecological Transition Minister Abou Bamba, speaking on World Environment Day, warned that climate change is already harming the nation. He highlighted that the country has lost about 80 % of its forest cover, largely due to cocoa farming, and is experiencing erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, flooding and landslides. The government pledged to prioritize environmental protection, build climate resilience through international fund partnerships and transition to a low‑carbon, inclusive economy.
