Ghana and Nigeria seek cooperation in fisheries management

Ghana and Nigeria are pursuing strengthened bilateral cooperation to manage marine resources and advance the blue economy in the Gulf of Guinea. During a meeting in Accra, Nigeria’s Minister for Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola, met with Ghana’s Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, to discuss combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and addressing declining fish stocks.

The discussions focused on joint research, information sharing, coordinated enforcement, and climate-resilient fisheries management. Both nations expressed a commitment to protecting marine ecosystems and facilitating legitimate fish trade.

In a separate effort to improve sector transparency, Ghana’s Fisheries Minister Emelia Arthur inspected fish-weighing systems at the Tema Fishing Harbour. This inspection aims to address concerns regarding Ghana’s European Union (EU) yellow card status by improving the accuracy and reliability of fish landing data and monitoring procedures within the fisheries value chain.
