Ghana and Russia agree to develop 2,000MW nuclear power plant
Ghana and Russia have agreed to cooperate on the development of a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant intended to bolster electricity security and support industrialization in Ghana. The agreement follows bilateral discussions between President John Dramani Mahama and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the project aims to provide reliable energy for industrial growth, noting it revives a vision originally initiated by Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The proposal aligns with recent statements from Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, regarding discussions with several African nations.
Beyond nuclear energy, the two countries have pledged to strengthen cooperation in defense, agriculture, and education. This includes pursuing a new defense agreement for strategic military equipment, expanding agricultural collaboration for grain and fertilizer, and increasing Russian scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students.
