James Agalga appointed Ghana Parliament Majority Leader

James Agalga, the Member of Parliament for Builsa North, has been named the new Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament after President John Dramani Mahama reshuffled the government. The change follows Mahama Ayariga’s move from the Majority Leader post to the ministerial role of Minister‑designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Agalga, a former Deputy Minister for the Interior and chair of the Defence and Interior Committee, highlighted his eight years as a ranking member and said he will not be intimidated, asking, “Do I look like somebody who can be bullied?” He pledged to work for the country and uphold the National Democratic Congress’s mandate.

Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul praised Agalga’s toughness but warned that he lacks senior leadership experience, noting that senior MPs such as Alexander Afenyo‑Markin and Patricia Appiagyei have longer records in top parliamentary roles. Nitiwul urged Agalga to learn quickly to manage government business in the House.

The reshuffle also reassigned Kenneth Gilbert Adjei to the Defence Ministry, moved Ahmed Ibrahim to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, and nominated Dr. Zanetor Agyeman‑Rawlings as Minister‑designate for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
