Ghana Armed Forces begin Lafa basin reclamation to combat flooding

The 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces has begun reclamation work at the Lafa water retention basin in Mallam to mitigate perennial flooding in the areas of Mallam, Weija, and Dansoman.

Coordinated by the Post-Flood Mitigation Task Force, the operation involves dredging the basin, removing accumulated solid waste and silt, and demolishing illegal structures that have encroached upon the water reserve. The intervention aims to restore the basin’s capacity to hold water, which has been significantly reduced by years of illegal waste dumping and unauthorized building.

This project is part of a broader national effort to restore waterways and drainage channels across Accra following devastating floods. Similar mitigation works are currently being conducted in Oyarifa, East Legon, and the Kpeshie Lagoon area.
