Ghana Armed Forces complete Accra-Kumasi Expressway clearing

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has completed the right-of-way clearing for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway corridor. Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei announced that engineers cleared the 175.6-kilometre stretch in 19 weeks, finishing one week ahead of the original 20-week schedule.

The clearing operation involved a corridor up to 120 metres wide to facilitate technical studies, environmental assessments, and future construction. This phase is preparatory and does not include the actual building of the road, bridges, or toll systems.

In parallel, the Ghanaian government is working to secure funding for the project, which is estimated to cost nearly $4 billion. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson indicated that $1.7 billion had been deposited into a dedicated account at the Bank of Ghana as of July 2026. The government aims to secure the full necessary financing by the end of 2026 without resorting to new loans.
