Ghana Armed Forces launches flood mitigation operations in Accra

The Ghana Armed Forces has launched a coordinated flood-mitigation programme across the Greater Accra Region. Led by the 15 Engineer Brigade, the military is undertaking dredging of retention ponds, the demolition of illegal structures, waste removal, and the restoration of degraded water bodies to improve drainage systems.

Brigadier General Richard Kinney, Commander of the 15 Engineer Brigade, announced the operations during the Government Accountability Series. The initiative aims to address recurring flooding caused by choked drains, silted ponds, and unauthorized developments in low-lying communities.

Work is already underway at several sites. Demolition and dredging have commenced at the Tessa Dam on Boundary Road, and dredging has been completed at Oyarifa. Military engineers are scheduled to move equipment to Abokobi and Teiman for retention pond works, followed by interventions at a major pond in Damfa within the La Nkwatanang Madina Municipality.
