Accra building collapse kills three, dozens rescued

A multi‑storey building under construction collapsed in Accra's North Industrial Area (Avenor) at about 4:25 a.m. on 7 June 2026. The disaster prompted a large‑scale emergency response involving the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces and the National Disaster Management Organisation.

Rescue teams pulled several survivors from the rubble, including two people taken to Ridge Hospital and another person in critical condition. The death toll rose to three as additional bodies were recovered.

Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey confirmed the fatality, while an eyewitness said, “I heard a huge bang and when we came out, the whole structure had come down.” Heavy machinery and specialised equipment were deployed to clear concrete slabs and twisted metal. The cause of the collapse remains unknown, with investigations to be launched after rescue operations conclude. The incident follows recent collapses in Accra, raising renewed concerns about building safety standards and regulatory enforcement.
