Ghana cashew industry struggles with low domestic processing rates
Ghana is facing economic challenges in its cashew industry due to a significant gap in domestic processing capacity. While the country produces an estimated 262,000 metric tonnes of raw cashew nuts annually, less than 6% of this production is processed within Ghana.
Most raw nuts are exported to Vietnam and India, where they are refined and sold at higher premium prices. This lack of local value addition means Ghana misses out on industrial growth, technical skill development, and tax revenues. Furthermore, farmers have seen a decline in farm-gate prices due to market uncertainties and a lack of steady local demand.
In contrast, neighboring Côte d’Ivoire has successfully expanded its cashew sector through aggressive investment in local processing, creating thousands of jobs and establishing itself as a major global player.
