Ghanaian cashew industry development and processing
Overview
Ghana’s cashew industry remains defined by a significant gap in domestic processing capacity. While the country produces approximately 262,000 metric tonnes of raw cashew nuts annually, less than 6% is processed locally. The majority of raw nuts are exported to India and Vietnam, where they are refined and sold at higher premium prices. This lack of local value addition results in lost industrial growth, technical skill development, and tax revenue for Ghana.
To combat waste, researchers at the CSIR-Food Research Institute are working through the MA-CASH initiative to commercialize discarded cashew apples. New technology has been developed to extend the shelf life of these fruits from 24 hours to six days for transport, with potential for year-long refrigeration, aiming to create products like juices, sausages, and bagels.
Despite these research efforts, Ghanaian farmers continue to face declining farm-gate prices due to market uncertainties and low local demand. This situation stands in stark contrast to neighboring Côte d’Ivoire, which has aggressively expanded its cashew sector through local processing investments, creating thousands of jobs and establishing itself as a major global player. As Ghana seeks to increase domestic processing of key commodities like cocoa and cashew to retain more economic value, the cashew industry faces ongoing competitive pressure from Côte d’Ivoire’s ability to capture industry profits.
