Ghana launches final phase evacuating 1,000 nationals from South Africa
The Ghanaian government announced the resumption of its evacuation programme, planning to repatriate roughly 1,000 Ghanaians from South Africa amid renewed xenophobic attacks. The operation is described as the final phase; earlier flights had already returned about 926 citizens. Flights were scheduled to land in Accra on July 25, 26 and 27 2026, with priority given to women, children, the elderly, people with medical conditions and students.
President John Mahama urged the African Union to put the violence on its agenda and accused the South African government of insufficient action. South Africa’s anti‑migrant unrest has resulted in at least four migrant deaths and prompted more than 160,000 foreign nationals to leave the country over the past two months. Ghana thanked the Church of Pentecost in Pretoria and Johannesburg and Global Kingdom Investment Pty Ltd for providing shelter to displaced Ghanaians during the crisis. Additionally, two Ghanaian nationals filed a petition with the International Criminal Court seeking an investigation into years of xenophobic violence in South Africa.
