Ghana completes evacuation of citizens from South Africa

On July 25, Ghana began the final phase of a mass repatriation exercise, flying a fresh batch of Ghanaians home from South Africa after weeks of xenophobic attacks. The operation targets nearly 900 nationals who voluntarily registered for return, adding to the roughly 926 Ghanaians already flown back in earlier stages.

High Commissioner to South Africa Benjamin Quashie announced the flights, saying, “We are going to do the final repatriation of close to 900 Ghanaians who have voluntarily given their names here in South Africa that they want to go.” The programme was coordinated by the Office of the President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with support from President John Dramani Mahama and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Once the emergency evacuation ends, remaining citizens will receive assistance through regular consular services.
