Ghana delays Traffitech-GH automated road fine system launch
Ghanaian authorities have postponed the launch of the Traffitech-GH automated traffic enforcement system until November 1, 2026. The delay follows concerns from the Police regarding insufficient public sensitization of motorists.
The new system utilizes cameras and handheld devices to monitor speeding, red-light violations, and over 45 other offenses. Once a violation is recorded, the registered vehicle owner will receive an SMS notification from “GPS-MTTD,” providing 14 days to either pay the fine or challenge the penalty.
The initiative aims to address rising road fatalities and injuries in Ghana. Data indicates that road crashes killed 2,949 people in 2025, an increase from 2,494 in 2024, while serious injuries rose to 16,714.
The project is a public-private partnership involving Nationwide Traffic Management & Enforcement Limited (NTMEL) and the Swedish technology provider Sensys Gatso. The deployment is expected to include fixed cameras at 34 hazardous junctions, approximately 20 vehicle-mounted cameras, and 30 handheld laser units.
