Ghana road infrastructure and enforcement updates

Ghana is implementing several technological initiatives to manage its road networks and improve transport safety and infrastructure funding.

Authorities have deployed TraffiTech, an automated enforcement system using cameras to monitor motorists for approximately 16 types of traffic offenses. This system enables the tracking of repeat offenders, with severe violations potentially leading to prosecution, license revocation, and driving bans. Complementing this, the National Road Safety Authority plans to introduce a mandatory towing registration system by 2027 to mitigate crashes involving stationary vehicles.

Furthering these transport reforms, the Minister of Roads and Highways announced the reintroduction of electronic road tolls on government-funded improved highways. This free-flow system will utilize RFID and automatic number plate recognition technology to allow vehicles to pass without stopping. Additionally, the upcoming Accra-Kumasi Expressway will feature a distinct tolling arrangement, providing a faster, fee-based alternative to existing routes. Revenue from these tolls is intended for reinvestment into the national road network.
