Ghana Demands Compensation and Justice from South Africa over Xenophobic Violence

Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that the government is establishing a comprehensive register of claims to document losses suffered by Ghanaians during recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. The register will support legal and diplomatic efforts to obtain compensation for destroyed businesses, abandoned investments and other property, echoing a similar demand made earlier by Nigeria.

The Ghanaian government has also called on South African authorities to investigate the killings of two Ghanaian nationals and to prosecute those responsible. International‑relations scholar Professor Vladimir Antwi‑Danso said the demand is a normal diplomatic response, citing the 2010 Gambian case where Ghana used ECOWAS and the African Union to secure accountability and compensation.
