Ghana deploys TraffiTech automated system to penalize traffic offenders

Ghana is implementing TraffiTech, an automated traffic enforcement system designed to monitor motorists and apprehend those violating road regulations. The system utilizes cameras mounted on poles, tripods, and vehicles to identify approximately 16 different types of traffic offences.

According to ACP Alexander Kweku Obeng of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department, the technology allows authorities to track repeat offenders. Motorists who commit multiple violations within a 24-month period may face escalating penalties. Upon a fifth offence, police may bypass standard fines to arrest the individual for prosecution in Motor Court, where convictions could lead to licence revocation and a one-year driving ban.

In a related safety initiative, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) announced plans for a mandatory towing system expected to roll out by 2027. To reduce crashes caused by stationary, broken-down vehicles, motorists will be required to register with or subscribe to a towing or insurance company. A dedicated platform will connect drivers to registered towing services.
