Ghana Education Minister to meet teacher unions over unpaid arrears
Ghanaian Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has called an emergency meeting with teacher union leadership to resolve validation issues preventing the payment of promotion salary arrears to approximately 28,000 teachers.
Of the roughly 80,000 teachers who had been demanding payment, the government successfully processed and paid arrears for 52,000 individuals by October 16. The remaining 28,000 individuals, which includes some non-teaching staff, have been unable to receive funds due to incomplete validation processes.
The Minister stated that the government is targeting payment for the outstanding group by mid-November or the end of November. He also noted that a supplementary allocation for October could be considered to facilitate these payments. The meeting follows a recent suspension of industrial action by teachers regarding these delays.
